William Gallas believes Manchester United is “too big a club” for England international Harry Maguire
Former Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur star William Gallas believes Manchester United is “too big a club” for England international Harry Maguire.
The 29-year-old signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. His career in Manchester started off decently. However, this season, the centre-back has lost his place in the Old Trafford side’s starting lineup.
Speaking to Genting Casino (h/t Manchester Evening News), Gallas, who spent 12 years in the English top flight, feels Maguire is not good enough to play for a club of United’s stature. He has also warned Tottenham against signing the defender.
“Manchester United is too big a club for Maguire, that is why he has not performed there. I’m not sure if Tottenham will want him at the back. They need defenders but Maguire would not be good for them.
“He is almost 30 years old and he does not have as much speed as others. The older Maguire gets, the less speed he will have.”
Since the previous campaign, the 29-year-old has struggled at the back for the Old Trafford side. The England international made a number of errors in the previous term which led to us being poor defensively.
At the end of last season, Erik ten Hag was appointed manager of the Red Devils. The Dutch head coach gave Maguire an opportunity in the team in the opening two games. Unfortunately, we lost to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
Consequently, the 29-year-old was dropped to the bench in place of Raphael Varane. The France international has since formed a great partnership with Lisandro Martinez in the backline.
The former Real Madrid star and Argentine 2022 World Cup winner have been relatively solid for United. They both made it to the finals of the prestigious tournament in Qatar as well.
Maguire was also impressive with England in the Middle East. The Three Lions made it to the quarter-finals but lost to France. The former Leicester defender was one of Gareth Southgate’s best players at the World Cup.

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old will have to compete with Varane and Martinez for a place in the team at the Manchester-based club. Thus, it remains to be seen whether the English centre-back is able to make his way back into Ten Hag’s plans.
