West Ham United approach for Harry Maguire blocked by Manchester United

Manchester United have blocked an approach from West Ham United to sign Harry Maguire in the ongoing transfer window, according to The Times (Subscription Required) [h/t Manchester Evening News].

This summer, the Hammers have already had a bid accepted from the Red Devils for the centre-back. The Irons were ready to pay £30 million to acquire the services of the England international.

However, in the end, David Moyes’ team were unable to materialise a deal and backed away. But the London Stadium side are willing to reignite their pursuit of the defender.

Although, this time around, Man United have told West Ham that Maguire will not be parting ways with the club in the coming days. It is understandable, considering the little time left in the transfer window.

If the Old Trafford side were to sell the former Leicester City star to the Hammers this summer, they would arguably need to find a replacement. However, there would not be a lot of time left in that regard.

United signed the centre-back in the summer of 2019. Subsequently, the English national became a key player for the Red Devils under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was even handed the captain’s armband.

Unfortunately, Maguire’s performances for the club have been on a decline for some time now. Under Erik ten Hag, the defender lost his place in the team.

Last season, the 30-year-old warmed the bench for the most part. In the ongoing campaign, the English national is yet to play a single minute for the Old Trafford side in a competitive fixture.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been the Dutch manager’s preferred option in the backline since last year. Victor Lindelof also seems to be ahead of Maguire in the pecking order.

But considering the former Real Madrid centre-back’s constant fitness issues, it is arguably wise for United to have quality in depth in defence. Thus, the Old Trafford side have evidently made the right decision not to let the former Leicester star leave for now.
