Uruguay coach talks up Edinson Cavani and his national team future
Speaking to 2 De Punta (h/t Metro), Assistant Uruguay national team coach Mario Rebollo stated that it didn’t matter who Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani plays for if he keeps performing consistently at a competitive level.
Cavani joined United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. The move was surprising considering Cavani was 33 years old and hadn’t made an appearance for PSG in almost 7 months.
But his start to life in England has been impressive so far and United were considering offering him a new contract in the summer. That, however, changed when his father, Luis Cavani, revealed the player’s intentions of joining Boca Juniors.
He stated that the former Napoli striker had held talks with vice president, Joan Roman Riquelme, over a possible move to the Xeneizes. (h/t Metro)

And now, Rebollo has stated that Cavani’s next club does not matter when it comes to his chances for the national team. He just has to play consistently at a competitive level.
“The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and where he’s playing at a good competitive level. If it’s close to here it would be great but only if he’s comfortable.”
The assistant coach is clearly hinting here that he would prefer if Cavani plays ‘close to’ Uruguay. But he says it won’t matter if the player continues to be in rhythm.
“It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable. I don’t care if it’s Boca or another place, we have to have him with rhythm and strong competition.”

Cavani was recently left out of Oscar Tabarez’s latest Uruguay team on account of his lack of match fitness. Now 34 and soon to be out of contract, the striker would know he has a big decision to make for his career.
