Twitter has often become the source of ascertaining many of the transfer rumours. If so, Manchester United fans may just start to rejoice that French superstar Antoine Griezmann may be on his way to Old Trafford in the summer. The Atletico Madrid striker has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the last 12 months. The rumours have intensified since Jose Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal. The Portuguese tried to sign Griezmann even when he was at Chelsea but Atletico Madrid were in such a strong position that in the steadfastly refused.

Atletico had just won the league title in the 2013-14 season and also reached the Champions League final for the second time in three years. Griezmann joined Atletico in the summer of 2014 from Real Sociedad. He is amongst the latest forwards to make it big at the Vicente Calderon. The rich tradition of forwards who have been transformed into superstars has been formed as a result of players like Radamel Falcao, Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan, and Fernando Torres gracing the pitch.

Griezmann is reported to have a £85 million release clause in his contract. After having just signed Paul Pogba for around the same figure, Manchester United might have not been favourites to spend an astronomical sum once again. Yet, the club’s incredible financial resources might just allow them to do so. After spotted bonding heavily with United’s Paul Pogba, Griezmann recently went on to state that he would like to play with Pogba on a more regular basis. It was seen as the first sign of intent from the 25-year-old. Now, the player’s brother seems to have been closely keeping tabs with United.

Theo Griezmann was one of those who was extremely happy to see Manchester United get a 4-0 win over Fenerbahce in the Europa League. It was an impressive performance from United, but why would Griezmann’s brother follow a team, with whom his brother does not have an association, in the Premier League. It clearly points out to Griezmann’s camp in advanced talks with United.

Even though Atletico Madrid are staring at a transfer ban that would prevent them to sign a replacement for Griezmann should he leave in January, it looks like the transfer wheels have been set in motion. Part of the reason would be Atletico’s slow decline even with Diego Simeone barking orders from the touchline.

Even Simeone maybe of the opinion that he may have taken Atletico as far as he could; the enigmatic Argentine recently reduced the length of the contract with the Spanish outfit sparking rumours about his departure. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes backed United’s interest in Griezmann. He said:

“I think Griezmann would be up there. He looks like a top centre-forward for Atletico. I think we need to be in the market for someone like that.”
