Transfer News: Stoke City register interest in Manchester United

According to Manchester Evening News, Stoke City are one of several Championship clubs in the race to sign Manchester United youngster, James Garner, on loan during this transfer window.

The Potters play in the second tier of English football, which is where Garner spent the whole of last season. He made 20 league appearances for Watford in the first half of the season, who ultimately gained promotion this summer. And he made the same number of appearances for Chris Hughton’s Nottingham Forest in the second.

Stoke are one club that can be his employers going into the new season as they also share an interest in Manchester City’s Liam Delap. But their manager, Michael O’Neill, was coy when asked about the progressions made in both transfers.

Garner to leave on loan?

Speaking to StokeLive (h/t Manchester Evening News) ahead of his team’s Championship curtain-raiser against Reading, O’Neill stated that there were no strong developments in that area as of now.

“They are two very coveted young players, which I think a lot of clubs in Championship would have ideally on their wish-list. There are no strong developments [with either].”

He added that the best his team can do is present themselves as a good option for any quality player seeking a loan spell during the closing stages of the transfer window. A loan spell could surely benefit Garner.

More Manchester United News:

The midfielder is not ahead of names like Paul Pogba, Fred, Nemanja Matic, or Scott McTominay and can struggle for playing time at Old Trafford. A move to a team like Stoke, or any other second division side, would hand him the minutes necessary for his development during his formative years.
