Ryan Giggs Believes This Chelsea Player Could Have Made Manchester United Better

Manchester United spent huge sums of money on players like Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, and Eric Bailly. Yet, they have not been able to reap much rewards with the club still struggling in the sixth spot. Even though United are unbeaten in the league since October, they have not been able to make progress in terms of league position. It is because rivals like Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool do not drop points often. As a result, the possibility of Manchester United finishing in the top four still looks to be in major doubt.

Former Manchester United great Ryan Giggs says that for all the strengthening that the club did in the transfer window, they could have signed one player who would have made the biggest difference – N’Golo Kante. The Welsh winger says that bringing in the former Leicester City midfielder would have made United almost invincible considering that they are extremely strong in several areas of the pitch. Kante won the league title with Leicester last season and he was one of the unsung heroes of the team. While most of the players went towards Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, Giggs says that Kante was the player holding the team together.

Since the player only had a release clause of £29 million, Giggs says that it would have been one of the best value for money buys made by United.

“All I can say is that last season I hoped United would sign Kante, and in the end his buy-out clause looked very good value at £29million. He wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.

“Kante hunts the ball down. He is so quick to cover space, get to the ball and make the tackle.

“I have played against that kind of opponent over the years. They are a nightmare – you cannot shake them off.”

Manchester United suffered a lot in the first few months of the campaign. It was not until Michael Carrick was recalled to the first-team that the club started making a major difference in terms of performances. The ability of Carrick to break down the opposition and help the team go forward is unrivalled, but he is coming to the end of his career at 35 years of age. Giggs reckons that Kante could have been a great addition in place of Carrick. One of the biggest conundrums for manager Jose Mourinho is to find a proper pairing for Ander Herrera in the defensive midfield positions.

Kante is proving that his season with Leicester is no flash in the pan, as he has been helping Chelsea establish a huge advantage in the Premier league. The 25-year-old is now looking on course to winning a second successive Premier league medal but with a different team. Giggs reckons that United could have been that team, as he has watched Chelsea build a 14 point advantage over the Red Devils even with a big chunk of the campaign still left. United are expected to strengthen in the midfield positions once again in the summer after allowing Morgan Schneiderlin to leave for Everton, while the future of Michael Carrick is still in doubt.
