Rio Ferdinand Club Career

Ferdinand, from a very young age, had a knack for sporting activities. He was constantly playing with local teams like Eltham Town and showed signs of becoming a pro footballer one day. Eventually, his physicality and stamina attracted the eyes of team scouts. He was invited to train with Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Millwall and Queens Park Rangers during his youth days. He even sometimes went to the Middlesbrough training facility.

However, Ferdinand chose the West Ham United youth system to kickstart his career. It was there that he had the chance to play with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard. The Hammers gave him his first Youth Training Scheme contract in January 1994.

Ferdinand’s grit, determination and physical ability helped him to rise through the youth ranks. Eventually, the Hammers offered him a professional contract. On 5 May 1996, he made his senior debut but didn’t convince the managers as he was soon loaned to AFC Bournemouth. He joined the Hammers again in the January of 1997.

Ferdinand’s talent was no secret. Manchester United were aware of him and made enquiries to West Ham in 1997. However, the Hammers ruled out any deal involving the young defender. In the 1997-98 season, he won the Hammers of the year award due to his exceptional performance.

Leeds United made a note of his growth and cashed in when the opportunity arrived. They spent a whopping £18 million in 2000 to make Ferdinand the then-most expensive defender. After a bumpy start at Elland Road, Ferdinand adapted to the process. He received the taste of early success by making it to the semi-final stage of the UEFA Champions League. He also scored a goal against Spain’s Deportivo La Coruña in the quarter-final. In the following season, he became the club captain. But, Leeds weren’t in a good financial state, and they had to sell their star defender in 2002 for £33.3 million to Manchester United.
