Midfield: Individual Targets for the Season

Looking ahead to the coming season, I thought it would be good to look at our squad at the moment and think about the targets that our players individually should be having this coming season.

After giving targets for our backline (goalkeepers and defenders) in my previous article which you can read herenext up I give targets for our midfielders.

Anderson:  It’s important for Ando to prove once again that four years after signing him from FC Porto that he is worth the money that was paid out. It’s important for him to establish himself again as a first team member this season as despite signing a new contract in December; he could well be sold if he has a bad season.

Ryan Giggs:  This season is likely to be Giggy’s’ last one at us (though we have been saying that for 2-3 years now) so it’s vital that he keeps doing what he does best and that’s keep a cool head for us in the big matches.  His passing as ever was incredible last season and as long as he keeps getting the assists in those big games he will always a valuable asset for us.

Park Ji-Sung:  Despite being injured a bit last season, last season was Park’s best in a United shirt. Its vial that he contributes to the side again this season, not just for his sake but for the team as his valuable goals and performances have become so vital for us down the years.

Michael Carrick: With his great passing ability, he needs to stay true to what he’s good at and try to control games in the manner that he was doing towards the end of the season. Carrick has a big season ahead if he is to remain one of our first-choice midfielders for the coming seasons.

Nani: Quite simply United’s Portuguese winger has to perform to the same standard that he set last season which was arguably his finest at Old Trafford. He has to avoid the histrionics that come with diving and rolling about and just get back on his feet and doing what he does best. If he does that, he will become a firm fan favourite.

Ashley Young:  There’s no doubt our signing from Aston Villa has the ability to be a top Premier League player. But this season he has to prove Fergie was right to pay £17million for his services. Young has to be our top assist man for the season and get a decent goal tally as well. Half the fans love him and half hate him. So he will need to play well to prove get those fans (me included) off his back.

Darren Fletcher: Of course it’s hard to say this with the fitness issues that Fletch has had (as we don’t know when he’ll be back to his best) but he just has to keep battling on this season and try to regain the form he had 2 seasons ago.  There’s no doubt if Fletch can get himself fit its a major plus for our squad.

Tom Cleverley:  After doing well last season on loan to Wigan, Tom just like other young players has to make the most of his chances this season and perform well. It will be a testing season for him, but if can fit into the team nicely we could have a star on our hands.

Antonio Valencia:  Of course he may be hampered by injury this season but Tonio needs to continue from where he left of last season. It’s vital that he uses his strength well and realises that he doesn’t have to get past his man every time to put in a good cross. It is vital that he challenges both Nani and Young for their places and remains as hard-working as ever.
