He was a top player at Manchester United and pocketed a considerable sum of money for his services. His annual salary for the last two years at United was $5,450,000 (2016) and $5,450,000 (2017).

Michael Carrick Playing Career (Club)

Michael Carrick started playing football at the age of four. He was a follower of Newcastle United in his childhood days. Carrick gave trials for Middlesbrough, Stoke City, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Chelsea at the age of Nine. Even though we know him as the midfield player, he played all his childhood as a striker, and he took the midfield role when playing for West Ham.

Carrick began his senior career with the Hammers. Notably, he won an FA Youth Cup while playing for the West Ham youth team. After receiving the breakthrough in the 2000–01 season, Carrick featured in 150 games for the Hammers. But, he had a volatile stint with West Ham and spent two loan spells at Swindon Town and Birmingham City. He moved to Tottenham in 2004.

During his Tottenham career, he was repeatedly ignored by then manager Jacques Santini. Carrick featured in 75 games for the Spurs and bagged two goals before moving to Manchester United in 2006.

He showed sparks of greatness in his first season with the Red Devils. He completed 50 appearances and helped the team win the Premier League title in 2006–07. He went on to win the English top-flight title 5 times. Carrick made more than 350 appearances for Red Devils across the Premier League and Champions League and became a Manchester United legend. He mostly played as a deep-lying central midfielder but served as emergency centre-back during several crises.

Michael Carrick Playing Career (International)

Carrick made his international debut in a friendly against Mexico in 2001, and he has since made 34 appearances for his nation. Having such a star-studded line-up, it’s fair to say the three lions overlooked Carrick. On 14 November 2015, against Spain, Carrick played his last game.

Michael Carrick Managerial career

After retiring, Carrick took the place of Rui Faria and became involved in the coaching staff under Jose Mourinho. He served as assistant manager for the Portuguese manager until his departure in 2018. After that, he assisted Ole Gunnar Solskjær in managerial duties. Recently, after the release of the Norwegian manager, The Red Devils announced Carrick as their caretaker manager.

He led the club to impressive wins in the league and a crucial 2-0 win over Villarreal to basically seal qualification for the 2021/22 UCL knockout rounds. He is now replaced at the helm by Ralf Rangnick, who is in charge of the team until the end of this season. Carrick is currently a free agent and called it quits from coaching after Rangnick’s appointment.
