Marco Reus to sign new Borussia Dortmund contract amidst Manchester United links

Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus is set to extend his contract at the German outfit amidst links to Manchester United, according to BILD (h/t Express).

As per previous reports, the 33-year-old’s representative was in talks with the Red Devils over a potential move in the upcoming transfer window. Other teams were also contacted by the forward’s camp.

However, it looks like the Germany international has decided to commit his future to BVB. After a stretched-out process, discussions between the two parties over a new deal are at the final stages.

Erik ten Hag is keen on adding competition in the number 10 position at United. To that end, Reus was being eyed by the Old Trafford side to challenge Bruno Fernandes.

The 33-year-old has become a legend at the Signal Iduna Park side since making his move in the summer of 2012. With superstars coming and leaving the Bundesliga giants, the German has been a constant for them.

However, multiple injuries have hampered Reus’ career. As a result, the forward seemingly has not been able to showcase the full extent of his talents over the years.

United have had immense joy after signing Christian Eriksen as a free agent last summer. The Denmark international looked to be in the final stages of his career at Brentford. However, the 31-year-old has been an inspiring addition to the Red Devils’ squad.

Fernandes has cemented a place in the attacking midfield role since making his way from Sporting CP. The Old Trafford side also got Marcel Sabitzer on loan in January, who has played as a number 10 in the last few matches.

While Reus is a quality star, his age and injury record do not make him a compelling buy. Ten Hag has Eriksen at his disposal, who mostly played behind the striker during his Tottenham Hotspur days. Therefore, the German’s contract extension should evidently not concern United.
