Lee Sharpe backs Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes to write his name into club folklore

According to the Daily Star, former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe has backed Bruno Fernandes to follow in the footsteps of both Eric Cantona and David Beckham.

The Portuguese international joined the club last year but has since emerged as our most valuable asset. He has since made 81 appearances for the club, scoring 43 goals and assisting 25 more.

Three of those goals came in our season opener against Leeds United last weekend. Fernandes also grabbed himself an assist as Marcelo Bielsa’s side were put to the sword. The Portuguese ace does not appear to show any signs of slowing down.

Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation since he joined United last year.

Sharpe has labelled Fernandes a world-class player and believes he has in him to join the pantheon of United greats. While it may be too soon to be sure, he is certainly on the right path. Arguably our best player since last February, he appears to be hungry for more.

“Going forward, his passing ability and his awareness and his finishing is world class.”

Fernandes has excelled in an attacking role and is often involved in most of our goals. Sharp reckons playing the Portuguese up the pitch helps make use of his attacking instincts to the maximum.

“We get the best out of Bruno Fernandes in the final third, so let’s get him into the final third and let’s give him the ball as much as we can in that area, then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be up there with the greats.”

Cantona was amongst United’s best-ever players in the Premier League era

As the most successful English team in the Premier League, United have seen three of their former players be inducted into the PL Hall of Fame. The likes of David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane have all cemented their spots not just in United folklore but also that of the league’s.

There is no reason why Fernandes cannot do the same. While there is still time yet for his turn to come, every goal he scores and every assist he makes takes him closer to that goal at Old Trafford.

United have now gone eight years without a Premier League title. In fact, we have not won it since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Whether Fernandes can be the man to help lead Ole Gunnar Solskajer to the promised land remains to be seen.
