Reading gets permission to complete talks with Man United starlet Charlie Savage
As stated by the Manchester Evening News, Reading FC are edging closer to securing the signing of Charlie Savage, as Manchester United have given the League One club the green light to initiate contact with the player.
Reading’s manager Ruben Selles’s side can now hold discussions with the 20-year-old midfielder’s representatives to progress in their pursuit of the player. Additionally, the two clubs have already reached an agreement regarding the transfer.
Savage, once regarded as a promising prospect with high potential, earned the belief and support of Man United’s manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian even handed him a brief UEFA Champions League debut, which was crucial for the young player.
However, as time has passed, Savage has found it difficult to break into the first team, leading to limited opportunities.
The lack of chances suggests that the 20-year-old is facing challenges in making a breakthrough at the club. His absence from the 31-man pre-season squad travelling to the US further hints at the possibility of him leaving the club.
With two years remaining on his contract, Savage is likely to be sold by the Red Devils as the club looks to trim their youth squad.
In an effort to strengthen their youth side, the club is planning to bring in Tyler and Jack Fletcher from Manchester City, while some other players may also depart to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Reading have expressed strong interest in Savage, and they have approached Man United about acquiring the 20-year-old midfield talent.
Selles sees Savage as the perfect fit for his team’s midfield and considers him an essential addition as he embarks on rebuilding the squad at the League One club.
The youngster’s recent experience playing in the division with Forest Green Rovers, where he has spent time since January, further adds to his appeal.
After making 15 appearances, including 13 starts, Savage was unable to prevent Forest Green Rovers from relegation to League Two.
United have given Reading permission to engage with the player’s representatives and proceed with negotiations. The two clubs have already reached an agreement on the deal.
Reading will now discuss the project and contract terms with the United Academy graduate in an attempt to persuade him to join their ranks.
Other EFL clubs, including some from the Championship, have also shown interest in the 20-year-old midfielder after his impressive performances in the preseason tour.
However, a move to Reading could provide the midfielder with a chance to become a significant player and potentially secure a regular starting position, which could help revitalise his promising career.
Man United are unlikely to regret their decision to sell Savage, but they may include clauses in the deal that could benefit them in the future.
They have done the same with former talent Tahith Chong, Ethan Laird and Zidane Iqbal, and this will help them to recoup a particular percentage of their fees if their players turn out to be decent signings in the future.
Ten Hag is not only focused on selling players, but he also has a keen eye for developing talents of his own. Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, and Hannibal Mejbri are all getting regular game time in the preseason matches.
