Lazio chief hopes Sergej Milinkovic-Savic extends contract amidst interest from Manchester United

Claudio Lotito, the president of Lazio, hopes Sergej Milinkovic-Savic extends his stay at the Serie A outfit amidst interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils have been closely watching the midfielder for years now.

The 27-year-old’s current deal with the Rome-based club expires in the summer of 2024 (transfermarkt). Thus, his time with the Biancocelesti is uncertain at the moment.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Lotito expressed Lazio’s desire to keep Milinkovic-Savic at the club beyond his existing deal. The Italian side aspire to continue their journey with the Serbia international.

“Contracts are done when they expire. From a technical point of view we have an interest in renewing him because he is a great player and a great man, I hope that the player will do the same.”

“Appointment on the agenda? What are we doing in the transfer market? In life everything that begins has an end, starting with life itself. Milinkovic-Savic is a player Lazio are banking on, he is an added value.”

The 27-year-old joined the Serie A outfit in the summer of 2015 from Belgian outfit Genk. Since then, the midfielder has been a pivotal part of the Rome-based club’s starting lineup.

Over the years, Milinkovic-Savic has not just shown his creativity but also an eye for goal from the middle of the park. In the current campaign, the midfielder has made 20 appearances for Lazio in all competitions, finding the back of the net five times and providing seven assists.

The 27-year-old also played a crucial role for Serbia at the World Cup in Qatar. However, the Eagles failed to make it out of the group stage of the prestigious competition.

United’s engine room consists of the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes. The trio have cemented their place in Erik ten Hag’s midfield in Manchester.

However, our bench strength is seemingly lacking. Fred and Scot McTominay have failed to be consistent in their time with the Red Devils. On the other hand, Donny van de Beek has struggled to get into the starting lineup.

Thus, the Old Trafford side could evidently do with more depth in the middle of the park. However, considering the current competition to get into the Dutch manager’s XI, will Milinkovic-Savic opt for a move to Manchester? Only time will tell.
