Glen Johnson backs Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to come good
Speaking in an interview with Genting Casino as quoted by Manchester Evening News, former English international Glen Johnson feels that England must back Marcus Rashford for the World Cup and thinks that the Manchester United man can be absolutely unstoppable.
Rashford has not had the best of times in football in recent months. His performances have come under a lot of scrutiny and the English prodigy doesn’t seem to be the player that he once was, with him struggling to get back to speed after an injury.
A product of Manchester United’s famed academy, Rashford broke into the first team in 2016 and quickly established himself as an important player. However, things changed after the 2020 Euros which England lost to Italy.
The 24-year-old Englishman was suffering from an injury for the majority of the Euros. He underwent surgery almost immediately after and it took some time for the player to come back from the setback. Since his return, however, he has been rather underwhelming.
Rashford played 32 times for the Red Devils last season scoring five goals and providing two assists across all competitions. That’s very below-par for a player, especially when Rashford had been so consistent in the previous seasons.
This season, however, things are looking better for the 24-year-old. He has started off the season well under Erik ten Hag, playing six games across all competitions scoring three goals and providing two assists across all competitions.
Rashford still does not find himself in the national squad with Gareth Southgate preferring to go with other options. However, Johnson thinks that the Man United forward must be in the starting 11 in the World Cup
“I’m a big fan of him and once he fully gets back to his best, he’s unstoppable. Sometimes when his confidence is down, he takes the easy option. He’s rapid, got a great strike on him, it’ll probably surprise people but I’d go for him.”
