Ghana ‘approach’ Kobbie Mainoo over switching international allegiance from England
The Ghanaian Football Association have set their sights on Kobbie Mainoo, the 18-year-old rising star from Manchester United, as a potential recruit for the national team. Mainoo’s recent standout performances under the management of Erik ten Hag have earned him acclaim and recognition, prompting interest from the Ghana FA.
Mainoo’s exceptional display, including a dramatic 97th-minute winner against Wolves, has sparked admiration from teammates like Rasmus Hojlund, who dubbed him a ‘generational talent.’ His captain Bruno Fernandes also lauded Mainoo’s abilities, noting that he had observed his talent two or three years ago.
Now, the Ghana FA is actively exploring the possibility of persuading Mainoo to switch his international allegiance to the African nation according to the Daily Mail who cite The Times as a source.
The Three Lions or The Black Stars?
A representative from the Ghana FA confirmed their interest in Mainoo, signalling a proactive approach to secure the midfielder for the national team. The potential switch would see Mainoo move from representing England at the youth level to joining the ranks of the African giants.
Despite Mainoo’s representation of England in six caps at the Under-19 level, he is yet to make his senior debut for the national side. This opens the door for Ghana to capitalise on Mainoo’s impressive performances for Erik ten Hag’s side.
Versatility is one of his best traits as he could seamlessly fit into all midfield roles and has the potential and skill in him to make an impact from anywhere. We are surely privy to that thanks to his recent cameos off the bench including his shift against Gary O’Neil’s midweek.
England manager Gareth Southgate, undoubtedly monitoring Mainoo’s rise through the ranks at United, may face increasing pressure to include the young midfielder in senior squads, especially considering his recent standout performances. With the European Championship on the horizon, Mainoo could present a compelling case for a call-up to the Three Lions, albeit an outside chance.
