Gary Neville believes Solskjaer has not been backed by the board

Speaking to Sky Sports after the Manchester derby (h/t Manchester Evening News), former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville said that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not been backed by the board in the transfer windows.

Manchester United played out an underwhelming 0-0 draw at Old Trafford this weekend against rivals Manchester City.

United have been good form in the league but the underwhelming draw to City after the UEFA Champions League exit last week put Solskjaer’s job under the microscope.

The club has spent over £200million since Solskjaer took over, including £75million on 5 players in the summer.

However, United missed out on their main summer target, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho. Right-wing is one area where United would have liked to strengthen before the start of this season.

This has led Gary Neville to question the backing that United managers after Sir Alex Ferguson, including Solskjaer, are getting from the board.

“They’re not anywhere near good enough. He’ll keep putting a positive spin on it, but the reality is he knows they’re not performances that are going to win titles.”

Neville highlighted the difficulties Solskjaer would have had in selecting his team for the match. He noted how the club needed a centre-back and right-winger in the summer but didn’t sign any. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

The former United right-back believes lack of options within the squad forced the Norwegian to play Paul Pogba down the left and Mason Greenwood on the right flank against City.

He also highlighted the fact that United have “six midfielders” in the squad which they are trying to fit within the squad.

This problem, he believes, has arisen because the board doesn’t back the manager to sign his priority targets.

Manchester United lie 8th in the table, 5 points away from league leaders Tottenham Hotspur, with a game in hand. They face Sheffield United in a late Thursday night kick-off next.
