Forwards: Individual Targets for the Season

Looking ahead to the coming season, I thought it would be good to look at our squad at the moment and think about the targets that our players individually should be having this coming season.

After giving targets for our backline (goalkeepers and defenders) and midfielders in my previous articles which you can read here and here next up I give targets for our forwards.

Michael Owen:  After two injury-hit seasons at Old Trafford, it was a surprise that Owen got a new contract for the coming season. He more than any of us will know that he’s got to keep fit if he is to have any chance of getting more time on the pitch. Obviously when he does get on it will be good for him to contribute and get goals to shut the critics up for a while.

Dimitar Berbatov: Quite simply, Berba has to be more consistent away from home where his attributes make him the perfect away-from-home player as he can hold up the ball well without giving up possession. Of course it’s vital of course that he keeps up his excellent home form for us and take as many chances for us as he did last season.

Wayne Rooney:  Our number 10 has to carry on from where he left off at the end of the season, when his performances were simply world class. His form in the final third of the season was vital in our season being successful. If he can maintain that form he can score as many goals as he can dare to dream of and we can stand a good chance of winning any trophy we want.

Javier Hernandez:  Due to the benchmark he set last year for us, anything other than the golden boot would disappoint me! Seriously though Chicharito just needs to make sure that he starts the season well making sure no-one can accuse him of having ‘second-season syndrome.’ There’s no doubt he will start the season as a first team regular.

Danny Welbeck: Despite doing well at Sunderland last year, Danny’s opportunities will be limited at first. He has to perform well when given the chance and try to use his head abit more when in a good position. He has to be able to get involved in the play and link up well the more creative players of the side which will improve his game.

Federico Macheda: Similar to Welbeck, I see Kiko’s opportunities limited at us with his best chances of games coming in the Carling Cup.  He needs to perform well when given his chance and make an impression to show that his goals against Aston Villa are not his last telling touches in a United shirt.

Mame Diouf: In all likelihood I expect Diouf to be sent out on loan next season to a fellow Premier League club or sold after the pre-season. He did do well in Norway, but last season at Blackburn found it tough especially after Sam Allardyce was sacked. Like Macheda and Welbeck he has to make the most of the little opportunities he gets so he can at least look good in the shop window.
