Man United star could make the step down to the Championship to escape Old Trafford nightmare

Derby County and Middlesborough in for Manchester United star Phil Jones

According to The Sun, Championship duo Derby County and Middlesborough are ready to make a move for Manchester United star Phil Jones.

The 28-year-old has not featured for United since January. It is fair to assume that his time at Old Trafford is drawing to a close.

Jones hasn’t been named in the club’s official squad for the Premier League as well as the UEFA Champions League. It is a clear indication of his standing in the club’s pecking order.

The 28-year-old was earlier a target for Premier League side Burnley. The Clarets were keen to make a move for Jones if they were forced to sell James Tarkowski.

However, with Egyptian businessman Mohamed El Kashany and lawyer Chris Farnell closing in on taking over Burnley, they will not need to part ways with Tarkowski.

While this could leave Jones’ Premier League aspirations in limbo, he could always make a move down a level.

Championship duo Middlesbrough and Derby County are believed to be readying moves for the versatile defender.

Jones signed an extension last year that saw him extend his United stay until 2023. The lucrative deal has him netting £100,000-a-week before bonuses.

Getting him off our books will also see us save considerably in wages. Jones’ injuries have prevented the Englishman from reaching the levels expected for him at United. However, he still a number of years left in him and can reinvent himself elsewhere.

Jones for his part is keen to stay on at United. However, he also hopes for a return to England fold. That could prove to be difficult if he does not play regularly for the Red Devils.

What his future holds remains to be seen.
